The main mills that hindered boats on the main flow of water were Hudd’s Mill near Stamford, Tallington & West Deeping Mills, Molecey Mill and Thorpe’s Mill at Market Deeping.

Lolham Mill was on a southern section of the River Welland and didn’t affect the passage of goods and Newstead Mill was on the River Gwash.

The weirs and sluices diverted water for the mill wheels when necessary and stopped the regular boats plying their trade up to villages on the way to Stamford/ This caused shortages of coal in the town and the inability of malt producers in Stamford to get their goods out.

A solution had to be found - but it took many years to be implemented despite regular bills and Parliamentary Acts. Meanwhile the mills continued to prosper but could only send their goods out locally rather than to wider markets.
