The Church Crawlers Group generally runs every month between March and October. It is led by Lionel Wall (who owns the popular website www.greatenglishchurches.co.uk). Despite the name, there is no crawling or even much walking involved! Lionel arranges an itinerary of usually three churches in the day with a break for lunch at a pub or restaurant. All of the churches are carefully chosen specifically for their architectural interest, art or furnishings. Lionel gives a short talk at each before leaving members to wander around and explore. Itineraries can involve up to a thirty-mile drive in each direction from Stamford (car sharing encouraged), although others are much more local, especially when the days are short. The day usually starts at 11.00 at the first site.
This group would suit anyone who has an interest in England's 8,000 pre-Reformation parish churches - the greatest free show on earth - but who would like to know much more about them and their mediaeval social context. Get to know the back story of the church and its contents.
The group is now open to new members. Please note, however, that lunch numbers will sometimes have to be restricted for reasons of practicality. If you think you might be interested, then visit Lionel's website - www.greatenglishchurches.co.uk - which will almost certainly describe a few churches near to where you live and many that have already been visited by the group. Use that to get a flavour of what delights you might see. If you like what you see and would like to give it a go then contact Lionel at the number on the newsletter.
