The water source? Why not the River Welland?
Why ask the question? It must be the River Welland! Well, yes and NO!
The water from the River Welland obviously filled the top of the lock at Hudd’s Mill but once the lock-gates were shut - it stopped!
The mill stream alongside needed a strong flow to drive the mill wheel and the river had already gone over the weir on the opposite side of the mill, so a different feed for the rest of the canal was really needed!
Water from the River Gwash was available just downstream and this is where the Stamford Canal became a real canal, being fed from a different location and not just a ‘navigation’; as most other river weir diversion solutions had been.
