Coals from Newcastle

How and why did that term become so very well known nationwide?

Quite simply because the local coal mining companies around Newcastle were able to get their coal out of the ground and down to the docks in sufficient and regular quantities.

Then for orders to be taken and fulfilled especially to places on the east coast and further inland via rivers, including London.

Today’s presentation is on how it got to Stamford

and other local places.

But first a quick question!

How was coal weighed and sold back then?

Tons?

Cwts?  (Hundredweights!)

Sack loads?

Kilo’s?

Tonnes?

NO. Chaldrons!
