This was the standard form of lock on the Stamford Canal.

Which ones had wooden bridges isn’t known but horses did change sides occasionally like the first wooden bridge in Uffington Park. Stone road bridges were a much later addition apart from Barnack Road like this one, as no others were shown on maps as late as 1813.

The excessive water above the lock when the gates were closed had to be diverted back to the river via gated sluices. Few of these remain (one is still behind Copthill Farm) but their use was very important.
