The goods carried, how and where from?
The main commodity carried on each trip up the canal was coal, needed by most of the properties in the villages along the way but more especially for the businesses and large houses in the town of Stamford.
The maltsters and other trades in Stamford needed to get their goods out to market, as well as the farmers alongside the canal between there and the Deepings - especially to London but also to many other places on the east coast, like Hull, and more inland places, like Boston, via the local navigable rivers.
The close proximity of the mills obviously benefited the mill owners for sales of flour in both directions.
In those days, the poor roads were used for passenger coaches, rather than carrying heavy loads. The journey on water from Spalding up to Stamford taking 4 days; and just 2-3 days going back downstream.
